Is a Sheltie Right for Me?
What is it about a Shetland sheepdog that makes people fall hopelessly in love with them? Some become attracted to their upbeat personality still others just fall for their natural beauty. A sheltie as they are called can be a wonderful pet when paired with the right owner. These dogs have unique personalities and demand a lot of attention from their owner.
So if you’re wondering if a Sheltie is the perfect dog for you then please keep reading…
In addition to lots of attention, they require a lot of exercise. Shelties are bred to work and lack of exercise they can lead to depression and destructive behavior. If you live in an apartment at least two walks each day and a trip to the park every weekend is the minimum recommendation.
Shelties want to be around you always so they cannot be outside dogs. They are happiest when surrounded by their family members. A sheltie will not be ignored. It will demand attention. Many times when I am working or watching TV Hogan will nudge my hand or drop a toy into my lap. He will not stop until he gets a pat on the head or a quick game of fetch.
However as demanding he can be he is aware of the times when we cannot be interrupted and will wait patiently for a good opportunity to ask for some attention. Shelties should not be hyper dogs, just high energy. They will also calm some as they mature.
Shelties are a double coated breed. This means that they have a tendency to shed a lot. Daily brushing will help, but if you cannot tolerate dog hair do not get a sheltie. Shelties will also go through a period of heavy shedding twice each year. This is called blowing coat.
Shelties also have a reputation for barking a lot. They are sensitive to their surroundings and if something is not right they will let you know. We have never had a barking problem with Hogan. We don’t know why this is. It seems to be a part of his personality.
If you live in an apartment and cannot have a noisy dog you should probably look for a quieter breed. Obedience classes can also offer a good solution for constant barking.

how do you teach a puppy to do weave poles?
we have a shetland sheepdog puppy and we want to know how to train it for agility. my mom bought cones for it to weave thorough. please help!
There are a lot of different methods to teach weave polls. I use the 2 x 2 method. Check out Clean run and pick up a DVD. there is too much to it to type here. You also should not weave or jump a puppy until they are at least a year old. They could get injured.
I like this 2 x 2 method by Susan Garrett

If you ever want to compete with your dog, then you need your dog to learn independent weave polls. Luring through the cones will not teach this. You need to find an instructor in your area that actually competes in agility so you do not learn incorrectly. You can make a lot of mistakes with your first agiltiy dog!
What is best way to hand feed Sheltie Puppies?
Hi, We have bred shelties in the past however the current litter has been a very unfortunate one. One of my bitches gave birth to 2 bitches and a dog, the dog has been having seizures and the mother has been very drawn to him, unfortunately he has just died. I am concerned that the other two are not feeding as they should be, and also think my bitch may have mastitis. Her nipple area has one big lump behind each. Which I dont ever recall having with previous litters. They both don’t open their mouths when I try and get them to latch onto the mother, so we have tried LActol whelping milk with the baby sized feeding bottles. This is working to no avail. Please guys, I am heart broken right now, so no lectures. I really do need advice, as I won’t be able to cope if I lose another one of them. They are beautiful, I am still in tears now as I type
You can put frozen cabbage leaves on the nipples that seem to be affected, but you want to make sure she does not have an infection. You need to get her to a vet. Do not let the pups nurse from her if you think that is the case or they will be drinking infected milk. Are the pups not opening their mouths for the bottle? Try a little warmed sugar water.
Here is a link to another Yahoo group for whelping pups that might be more help.

Make sure the pups are kept warm. I would get the mom and pups to the vet though as the pups may need IV fluids to get them going and mom sounds like she needs care too.
is she a sheltie or collie?

the rescue is claiming she’s just a large sheltie. She weighs almost 50albs though, shelties do not get that big do they? I thought they were like 20lbs and the collies were closer to 50lb. Does she just look overweight?
It normally wouldn’t matter but I have weight restrictions. If she’s overweight, I can bring her ohme. If she’s not overweight and is at a healthy weight for her, I can’t.
It’s a difference of 5lbs but I’m pushing it with managment as it is. I don’t want to temp fate.
Shorter face, I would say Sheltie. Collies have those longggg snouts!
how big do pomeranian/sheltie mix dogs get?
Could be as small as a Pomeranian or as big as a Sheltie or anywhere in between. Depends on the genes.
