Best way to introduce new puppy to home?
We are going to get a female Shetland Sheepdog puppy soon; however, we also have a male Silky Terrier at home already. He is about 3 years old. I do not really want our dogs to fight for their whole lives. Is there any way I can help them to get along better and to prepare my home for our new dog?
If they do. I suspect they’ll get along fine, but just in case. I want to be ready.
This may not be the right way- BUt when I brought my puppy home I just let her in the yard with my older dog- If she stepped out of line he let her know- I have never had a dog fight ..
Now thatthey are both older they play and she is so attached to him, Best friends- But I really didn’t need to do anything..
Titus took care of it
how do i get my 5 month old sheltie puppy to be on my waking up schedule?
right now she wants out of her crate, about two hours earlier than i get up. how can i best train her to wait till i want to get up, is this possible. she will cry forever until i let her out of her crate.
I’m an obedience trainer and you would think this would be a no brainer. Truth is, it is more difficult than teaching a dominant to be submissive.
I acquired a 6 mos. old Manchester Terrier, who had noooo training whatsoever. Went were he wanted, when he wanted. I thanked the breeder every day.
First I had to teach him how to ask to go outside. (This was beyond actually regulating his schedule and teaching him to go outside) Every time he barked I hurried to him and took him outdoors whether he had to go or not. He was of course showered with praise when he did. BUT now he figured when he woke up and needed to go out I should keep running to him. Imagine my horror to find out that he wanted to go out a 5:00 AM and I don’t even start to wake up until 7:00 AM. If I didn’t go when he started barking he would keep barking incessantly and wake up the whole house until I did. What did I do? I set my alarm for 10 minutes before he normally got up and then went and woke him up to go out. After a few days I set the alarm a little later but still went immediately to take him out. After a week or two he began to realize that the faint sound that he could hear meant that I was coming. He started waiting for the alarm to go before he barked his command. Eventually, because I do like my weekend sleep, I stopped setting the alarm on some days and he did not bark until he heard me moving.
Now it may be a product of his maturing because this did take several weeks to come full circle or a product of regulating his behavior. Either way, he now sleep until at least 7:30 AM.
Make sure when you set your alarm it is just loud enough so that you pet has to listen for it.
Good Luck, this is not an easy exercise.
My Dog is 12 years old and recently his back legs are shaking like adults do when on a nerve.?
He is a cross between a sheltie and we are not sure what as he was a rescue dog at 6 weeks old.
Do you think he should see a vet.
My dog is 10. his legs shake all the time. its when he has been laying down on the leg which catches a nerve. if you are really worried go to the vet just in case. but it is common in older dogs. it doesnt matter what breed he is really. hope this helps x
I have a short haired puppy, he is supposedly a sheltie terrier mix?
I think that there is more mixes in him then that, but he sheds bad, what is the best brush that i can use to help with this? Also, what is the best way of breaking him from chewing on EVERYTHING in the house, he gets stuff off the tables and counters nothing is safe! He is about 7 months old, and is very smart, he has been housebroken since about 2 months of age, he sits, lays, shakes, speaks, and I need to get him in obience classes also, I live in northwest Indiana any suggestions on places to take him for training?….I know there are a lot of questions in there, lol…anyone who could help I would greatly appreciate it!
For shedding, I recommend the furminator - it takes out dead hair that the dog is going to shed anyway and leaves them shiny and very soft. I love it, and I also brush my dog with a regular brush after she gets dirty and such.
Teaching him to chew on appropriate things takes time, patience, and consistency - and some awesome chew toys help. I got my dog a Tuffie and she hasn’t destroyed it yet (she has mighty jaws). She also chews on tennis balls, squeakies, bones, and the like. When you catch your dog chewing on something you don’t like, tell him no and hand him a toy. When he chews it, praise him (he’s having an awesome time here, getting love AND chewing). Bitter apple spray or cayenne pepper on things you don’t want him to chew also works. Chewing can also be out of boredom - your dog is smart, so consider a Kong, Buster Cube, or treat ball and feed his meals in that. That way he has to work for his food, which is great mental exercise. So is obedience training.
Obedience classes are a great idea! I did "positive reinforcement training" with my dog and love it. Search for "dog training methods" and read about the different thought on it - positive reinforcement, corrections, and somewhere in between. It helps if you agree with your trainer about the methods to use. The website I’m giving you is associated with positive reinforcement training, which I found a lot more fun than relying more on corrections. It also has a search to find trainers in your area.
Good luck!
Is this a good ad for 8-week-old puppies for sale?
First of all, I just want to clarify that we aren’t BYB (back yard breeders). Both parents and most of the dogs in their lineage have been genetically tested for genetic problems that commonly affect the breed. We didn’t breed them for money (the vet costs, food, toys, montly Frontline/Hearguard, classes, agility enteries) far surpass the costs of what we would get from the sale of the pups. Plus, we have 4 cats that have every shot there is and also get Frontline every day and all of are animals are on the finest of foods. We also have a geriatic cat with early stages of kidney failure and his treatments are now well into the thousands. WE LOVE OUR PETS and consider more of family members. Potentail owners will be screened and have to sign an agreement that they will have them spayed/neutered as this litter doesn’t look like they will be show quaility with the exception of one (just because dogs have alot of CH lineage in doesn’t mean they will have show quality pups). Dad is show quality but mom is just under the height requirements. I just chose not to show them and concentrate on agility (the daddy didn’t take to it, LOL). This is the only litter we have ever had and mom will be spayed after the pups go. They do have CH lineage on both sides. I also checked with several well known breeders to see if they thought the sire and dam were compatible. Sorry, I have to say all this but if I didn’t I would be called all sorts of names and told that I shouldn’t be breeding in the first place with so many unwanted puppies at shelters. I bred them because they have so many great qualities and I want other families to have the same joy of having one of the pups as a family member!
ANYWAYS! Is the ad "catchty"? Any changes you would make? I’m going to include photos of the puppies on there and possibly of the parents! THANKS FOR THE FEEDBACK! AND HERE IS THE AD!
