My 5 month old Sheltie puppy is scared to death of larger dogs, how can I help him not be so afraid?
His name is Toby and he’s a Sheltland Sheepdog (Shelties tend to be weary of strange dogs and people, it’s part of their nature). We also have a 7 month old Sheltie named Emma. Emma takes Agility and Obedience so she’s used to strange dogs. She only gets scared if a large dog runs over to her and acts like it might jump on her. If this happens, she rolls over on her back and tucks her tail in to defend herself from being trampled. Toby, on the otherhand, yelps and screams like he’s being killed even if the dog doesn’t even touch him. He’s so afraid of being stepped on! He also rolls over on his back in this ’submissive’ position. Part of the problem was we got him when he was very tiny and Emma was considerably bigger and she would accidentally step on him and hurt him a bit if we weren’t watching them carefully. She wanted to play with him so badly and didn’t realize (being a young puppy herself) that she could hurt him. Now, they are much closer (continued in more details)
So they play together wonderfully and are the best of friends. Back to the problem. I would like to do obedience and agility with Toby as well. I’m planning on entering him in a basic obedience class soon since he knows all the basic commands. He is generally not fearful of strangers and wags his tail and wants to be pet which is good. Do you think he’ll get used to bigger dogs by taking obedience? Is this behavior common? One other note, he is the biggest baby. When he gets a shot, he screams for minutes like he’s being murdered. I’m afraid if he doesn’t get used to bigger dogs, he’ll never be able to compete! What advice can you give me?
Take him to dog training classes and expose him to big dogs if this doesn’t work get a really big dog stuffed animal if this doesn’t work then watch movies with big dogs.
If this doesn’t work i’m sorry I couldn’t help but maybe also ur dog just has a fear like sum of us r afraid of rollercoasters or heights.
Again I’m sorry if this didn’t help

Take him to Puppy Classess.
I suggest you go on the internet and find a site that deals with your breed of dog. There you will probably find that you can email the breeders. I suggest you email them as they would have many years experience and you will find there input invaluable. I have done this with my Akita and found that breeders love there breed of dog and are more than willing to help pet owners of the same breed.
