What is best way to hand feed Sheltie Puppies?

By admin · Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Hi, We have bred shelties in the past however the current litter has been a very unfortunate one. One of my bitches gave birth to 2 bitches and a dog, the dog has been having seizures and the mother has been very drawn to him, unfortunately he has just died. I am concerned that the other two are not feeding as they should be, and also think my bitch may have mastitis. Her nipple area has one big lump behind each. Which I dont ever recall having with previous litters. They both don’t open their mouths when I try and get them to latch onto the mother, so we have tried LActol whelping milk with the baby sized feeding bottles. This is working to no avail. Please guys, I am heart broken right now, so no lectures. I really do need advice, as I won’t be able to cope if I lose another one of them. They are beautiful, I am still in tears now as I type

You can put frozen cabbage leaves on the nipples that seem to be affected, but you want to make sure she does not have an infection. You need to get her to a vet. Do not let the pups nurse from her if you think that is the case or they will be drinking infected milk. Are the pups not opening their mouths for the bottle? Try a little warmed sugar water.

Make sure the pups are kept warm. I would get the mom and pups to the vet though as the pups may need IV fluids to get them going and mom sounds like she needs care too.

If you think she has Mastitis, you need to get her to the ER Vet tonight. Also, I would take the other 2 pups with you to make sure they don’t have cleft pallets. If they are not feeding with a bottle, the Vet can show you how to tube feed them. I’m sorry that you lost your little guy. Unfortunately, problems can arise with any littler. This is the chance that you take whenever you decide to breed. Even the most knowledgeable show breeders that have been breeding for 30 years can have issues. It’s all a crap shoot. I wish you well with this situation and hope that you will consider spaying your b**ch.
