Do shelties ever grow out of this whining stage?

By admin · Thursday, March 4th, 2010

My sheltie is such a butthead when it comes to whining he is almost 1 year old. Will he ever stop? Also when we switched him over to grown dog food,(we did half and half of baby dog food and grown dog food for about a week), he stops with half of the food still in the bowl. We have to stand over him just to make sure he eats the rest. Why is he doing that? Sheltie experts? No rude comments please.
We feed him one cup of food in the morning and one cup at night, he gets alot of exercise.

I got my first Sheltie in 1967 (bred and showed them) and lost my last 3 years ago.

I never had a whiny Sheltie. If he whines, ignore him. If you give him any attention, he will continue whining; even negative attention is preferred to no attention at all. But, maybe he needs something from you? Are you playing with him? Taking him for walks? Training tricks? Shelties are very bright dogs and do crave and need interaction with their human.

Maybe you are feeding him too much and he doesn’t need the rest of the food? When he stops eating his food, just pick up the bowl. Depending on the size of a Sheltie, the exercise he gets and the food you are feeding him, between 1/2 to 1 cup , two times a day is norm.

You need to learn to ignore the wining, as the more you pay attention to him when he wines the more he do it. He may be fussy eater, i try a different brand of food. Dogs generally don;t have to eat what in the bowl, most will go back when there hungry.

Well, I have a 7 year old sheltie and he doesn’t whine. Much. It depends on what he whining over. If he’s whining over you leaving him, sorry, but that’s never going to stop. If he’s whining at the table for food than what you do is teach him to lay about 2 or 3 yards away from the table,if he start’s to whine, tell him no and stare at him for a few seconds (they know what that means) after dinner is done, dishes are gone from the table, give him a treat. After awhile of this, limet the number of times he can whine, let’s say…4 times? This means that if he whines a 5th time, no treat for him. Than, after awhile of this, put the number down to 3. And so on and so on until he’s not allowed to whine at all. Than awhile after that, you can stop giving him treats. Hope that helps:)
