Anyone have a Sheltie/Lab mix dog?

By admin · Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

I decided I want a Sheltie/Lab mix puppy, but there isn’t a lot of information about them. Does anyone have one so I can find out about their temperment, size, etc?
The puppies are at a shelter. I am not trying to purposely find this breed or breed the two dogs myself. I just wanted to know more information about them.

Are you nuts? Breed a 75 lb lab to a 20 lb sheltie for what reason? Maybe to kill the mom during whelping? No one can tell you what the temperament, color, size, health, or anything else might be since breeding 2 completely unrelated breeds produces nothing more than a mix breed mutt. Nothing wrong with a mutt — get one from your local shelter. Please don’t encourage this type of breeding.
Add: 8-28, OH so you found a litter at the shelter. Holy cow, that has to be a strange looking bunch. Can you post any photos?

They are mutts so you aren’t going to find any info about them. You can look up information about Shelties OR Labs and get a general idea of temperament, size, looks, etc. However, you must remember that any puppy from a mixed litter could look like either parent or a combination of both. Make sure you get this mix from a shelter otherwise you will be supporting a backyard breeder or puppymill.

Well they are a mix, you can not guarantee a temperament or size. When you have a mixed dog everything is a guess.

You could end up with a dog the size of a Lab, with the personality of a Sheltie. Or a dog the size of a Sheltie and the personality of a Lab.

So, there’s not really an answer for it. It’s all based on the individual. I’m sorry. Maybe look into a purebred Lab or Sheltie. Though I will say, if this is what you want, look in shelters and rescues. You don’t want to buy one from someone. They are usually an unscrupulous person.

At first I thought you already had one (I was thinking, God bless you, poor thing!) but then you’re saying you would like to have one and want to know how to find a specifically intended mix! To that I would answer that you really wouldn’t want this mixture…are you aware of each of these breeds? Mixing them probably wouldn’t produce a desired offspring (they don’t complement each other)…it would kill a Sheltie mom, so it’d have to be a Lab mom and probably artificially done since a Sheltie couldn’t probably have a successful mount or tie-off.

Don’t ignore or forget that purposefully mixing breeds is completely irresponsible. If you’re happy with a mixed breed, why not go to the shelter and rescue one (sometimes they even have puppies) and be a solution to the problem rather than a contributor.

I have a female Sheltie lab mix and I absolutely love her. She is extremely intelligent, plays frisbee and ball like a pro and is the most effectionate dog I have ever had. I was on-line looking for another one when I came across your message.

Not sure if you got the dog or not, but we have 2 sheltie/lab mixed dogs we got almost 2 years ago. They are beautiful, well tempered obedient dogs. They are medium sized (female about 50lbs, male 65lbs). They are fabulous with our children. Our female is higher energy than the male and will run all day long if we let her. They bark very little, and are very trainable. I hope you rescued the dog from the shelter as we did, they have turned out to be wonderful members of our family!

I HAVE 5 SHELTIE/LAB MIX PUPPIES…THEY R ALL GONNA BE SMALL DAD IS A CHOCLATE LAD AND MOM IS A BLACK SHELTIE

We had a Sheltie/Beagle mix female and there’s no better dog than that. Sweet, loyal, good temperament and teachable. As she was so smart. Irreplaceable!!

I have a lab/shelie mix. She is a pretty good Dog. However she seams to be more like a shelie then the lab. She is a medium size dog weighs maybe 45 pounds, She has a short hair and collie looking face and ears. No web toes like the lab. She is great but not much of a watch dog. She is great with kids however when the kids getting running around her sheltie side kicks in and she is bitting there anckles. She is very good natured

I also got 2 rescue sheltie/lab mix puppies. They are sisters. One favors the lab although she is only 38 lbs at 7 months. The other favors the sheltie and weighs 28 lbs. They are smart and loving girls. Easily trainable. If you find this mix, they make wonderful pets.

I had a sheltie/lab female for 13 years which I rescued. She was also extremely smart, sweet and fantastic with children. It is very hard to find another sheltie mix like this in the Detroit area. I would love another one.

I have a male sheltie/lab mix and you will not find a better companion. He comes to work with me on the farm everyday and never leaves my side. Very smart and very low maintenence. I can go away for the evening and he will be laying in the same spot when I get home. A light whistle and he will come running right to you.

i have a black lab sheltie mix and i am looking for a home for her. She is about 4 years old and in good health. she is very loving, likes kids and is great with other animals. She is just too bigt o keep at my house anymore. please contact me if ur inrersted

I have a 10 week old sheltie lab mix. So far she is very well tempered and seems to be training well. Going kind of slow with the house training. Although she is still small it seems like she goes all the time! As of right now she is 12 lbs I am very curious to see how big she’s going to get. She seems to look alot more like a lab but hops around like a sheltie
