My papillon/sheltie mix has suddenly begun losing massive chunks of fur.No diet/life changes..What’s going on?

I have a papillon and sheltie mix. All through spring and most of summer he’s been shedding normally, hardly a problem. I use an oatmeal shampoo/conditioner every 2 weeks on him, and he gets brushed weekly. There have been no diet or lifestyle changes, but he has suddenly begun losing massive chunks of fur. I will be petting him and get chunks of fur on my hands that I have to pick off every minute. Everywhere he goes a few chunks of fur get left behind. It’s everywhere. What could be going on?

This clearly calls for a check by your vet. Thyroid could be the problem. It could also be an allergy to an ingredient in his food. Some people believe that beet pulp in food can cause problems. When one of my paps began to lose coat like crazy, I changed her food to one without beet and had no further issues. Can’t hurt to give that a try. Good luck to you and your boy!

Have his Thyroid checked. It’s a simple *in house* blood test, and you will know the results in about 15 minutes. Yes, Thyroid issues can cause massive shedding and hair loss.
