Want a dog (Sheltie??)?

By admin · Monday, March 22nd, 2010

Hi there! I would love to get a dog, but I’ll admit having less experience. I’ve always been a "cat person" myself. I need an inside dog because if the animal is inside with me, walking around, then it will get plenty of attention. A dog strictly outside would NOT.

I have a small apartment, but it is in the country on a BEAUTIFUL college campus with plenty of places to walk. I usually walk 2 hours a day.

I do work 8 hours, but usually spend my lunch hour at home (work and live on the same campus)

I love shelties, they seem to pretty much fit what I’m looking for. I’d have to work with it from the time it’s a puppy, to train it to tone down the barking.

What do you all think?

Where do you reccomend getting one? Purebred Sheltie pups are so expensive! I’d love to rescue an adult, but I think, for the sake of my 2 cats who are not used to dogs, that I would have to get a puppy. The cats will be more tolerant/less intimidated of it, and it will grow up with the cats and know how
know how to relate to them and how to treat them.

I like Shelties a lot too. But I had a neighbor that had one at the apartments I used to live at….and that dog was crazy. She left it outside in a tiny (and I mean tiny) yard. It constantly barked. It appeared wayyy too high energy for both the owner and the space that it was in. I would get an even smaller dog if I were you.

u seem committed to the idea. Pups are obv a lot of work tho, so maybe a rescue/slightly older one that is already used to cats would be better.

I think you should adopt a puppy that likes you as soon as it meets you. You’ll love each other and have a special bond. If have a cat it’ll might bond with the puppy. It’s hard for puppy to bond with a cat mine did and they loved each other. Good luck girl.

OH!!! My childhood dog growing up was a Sheltie. And she was amazing!! We had her 18 years and she was part of the family. They are wonderful dogs, and make perfect companions. They are working dogs though- they herd. Fluffy (my dog) would constantly circle you and nip your heels if you left the room. She wanted the whole family together. That habit can be broken. Also, they are total barkers. Fluffy barked at everything from the doorbell to the phone to the wheel of fortune bell to the water running. She only stopped when she went deaf ;) Still, she was a loyal and beautful dog and I loved mine. 2 hours a day would be plenty of walking fo ra Sheltie. They’re no more work then any other dog. But the are shedders. Good luck!
